Rationale

This was created for a branding project in my graphics class in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. The idea was to create a poster and GIF for a charity event you're passionate about.

I selected to make a poster and GIF for the event Fashion Heals. This is a charity fashion show in support of The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids for short) in Toronto, Canada. The funds raised go towards supporting a research chair in oncology. Participants in the fashion show are all current or past patients or parents who want to pay it forward and show o the life Sick Kids has given to them.

The concept for my poster is based around a lot of the models being young girls. The event strives to make patients feel comfortable and beautiful while dressing up to walk the runway. I portrayed small feet in big high heels, which is a fun play on the name of the event as well. The image is striking and playful, which are two qualities Sick Kids as a hospital tries to portray. They are all about being strong and fighting with power, rather than succumbing to fear, weakness and hopelessness.

I wanted this poster to evoke a sense of emotion from the audience. They should feel a sense of joy looking at the bright colors and cute illustrations, but when they stare longer, they should come to realize that the small feet in big shoes is a representative of what this event is targeting. This would hopefully trigger them to want to learn more, seeing as the image tells a story but does not finish it. I believe that when looking at this poster, the audience gets a positive yet somber vibe.

The way I created my imagery was mainly through Adobe Illustrator. I worked with reference and inspiration images I found online of girls playing dress-up, and put together three different but complimentary shoes and legs. I worked to shade the legs and shoes to make them more dynamic, but not too much detail to keep it simple enough for someone to glance at and appreciate. I wanted to create a striking yet simplistic image to stay true to not only my style, but the aesthetic of the event, which is modern and clean.
